MY FIRST EXHIBITION

I am not a beginner. I have been shooting films and working in my darkroom for nearly 20 years. But I am self demanding and it wasn’t until two or three years ago that I felt the need of showing my photographs. Firstly, I tried a webpage. That was good but not the best. The beauty of an original fiber-base gelatin silver print is something you have to show; a digital version through scanning the print is not enough.

So I wanted to exhibit my prints. Luckily, Petra Hermann and the artist Helmut Kiesewetter, owners of Kunstraum La Palma Gallery, bet on my photographs. And I had my first exhibition in January. I exhibited 25 prints (nudes, nature, cityscape, portrait). A lot of people came to the opening; also, there was a performance by my friend Yose Fernández. The public, in the opening and during the exhibition, was cosmopolitan. And listening to visitors’ feedback was rewarding. Last, but not least, a German collector bought four prints.

I must acknowledge Daniel Perdomo Petterson's work. He’s the owner of a framing workshop called ‘La Chatita’ (https://www.facebook.com/TallerLaChatita/) and we’ve been working together lately to get close to a museum standards in mounting and framing. Definitely, he did a good job.

MI PRIMERA EXPOSICIÓN

No soy un principiante. He estado casi veinte años fotografiando y trabajando en mi laboratorio. Pero soy muy autoexigente y hasta hace dos o tres años no sentí la necesidad de mostrar mis fotografías. Primero lo intenté con una página web, pero no me dejó del todo satisfecho. La belleza de una copia a la gelatina de plata en papel baritado es algo que tienes que ver; una versión digitalizada de esa copia mediante un escaneo no es suficiente.

Así que quise exponer mis fotografías. Por suerte, Petra Hermann y el artista Helmut Kiesewetter, dueños de la galería Kunstraum La Palma, apostaron por mi fotografía. Y así tuvo lugar mi primera exposición en enero. Expuse 25 copias (desnudos, naturaleza, paisajes urbanos, retratos). Vino mucha gente a la inauguración; hubo una performance de mi amigo Yose Fernández. El público, tanto en la inauguración como a lo largo de la exposición, fue cosmopolita. Resultó enriquecedor escuchar los comentarios de los visitantes sobre mi obra. Y por último, y no por ello no menos importante, un coleccionista alemán me compró cuatro fotografías.

Tengo mucho que agradecer a Daniel Perdomo Petterson, responsable del taller de enmarcaciones “La Chatita” (https://www.facebook.com/TallerLaChatita/). Estos años hemos trabajado para lograr unos estándares casi museísticos de montaje y enmarcado de mis fotografías. Ha hecho una labor magnífica.
